Wetlandkeepers Course | March 5, 2019 - 10:23am |
During the weekend of July 14-16 MABRRI student researchers, Maria Kawahara, Curtis Rispin, and Lauren Shaw participated in a Wetland Keepers Course facilitated by Michele Jones and the British Columbia Wildlife Federation (BCWF). The course took place at North Island College in Campbell River and was designed to teach participants wetland mapping, plant and animal identification, soil sampling, and other wetland classification and stewardship skills. |
Wetlandkeepers Course | March 5, 2019 - 10:22am |
The BC Wildlife Federation partnered with Greenways Land Trust in Campbell River, BC to host a Wetlands Keeper course free of charge and open to the public. Wetlands are important ecosystems that are disappearing in BC and urgently needs community protection. In 2016, MABRRI started a wetland mapping project in partnership with the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) and Vancouver Island University (VIU). This project is helping build an inventory of where wetlands are, and promotes research regarding connectivity between wetlands and other water systems. |
Wetland Practice Field Day | March 5, 2019 - 9:55am |
Today the MABRRI research team loaded all of their gear in the VIU truck and headed north to Parksville B.C, in search of the Ermineskin wetland nature park. Ermineskin wetland is the first wetland that we have decided to recce in preparation for our wetland mapping project, which is a project initiated by MABRRI in collaboration with the Regional District of Nanaimo’s (RDN) Drinking Water and Watershed Protection Program (DWWP). |
Wetland Monitoring in the MABR | June 11, 2021 - 9:44am |
The MABR is comprised of many unique and diverse ecological landscapes, including some very spectacular wetlands! However, relatively little is known about these wetlands and their importance in the hydrology of the MABR. Since both groundwater and surface water play a critical role in providing many coastal communities in MABR with water throughout the year, the Regional District of Nanaimo’s (RDN) Drinking Water and Watershed Protection (DWWP) program and MABRRI began researching more about these wetlands through the Wetland Mapping and Monitoring project. |
Wetland Mapping - October 4th and 25th | October 31, 2019 - 3:12pm |
One of my favourite things about working at MABRRI is the opportunity to help with a variety of the different ongoing projects. On October 4th and 25th I joined Haley, Jess, and Alanna on trips to Gabriola Island for the Wetland Mapping project. The goal was to map some of the wetlands on the island to better understand where they are situated and how they are classified. Our first day of mapping was a very wet one, as we were greeted with heavy rain soon after we arrived at the site. Haley and Jess conquered one big wetland and Alanna and I another. |
Wetland Mapping | March 5, 2019 - 10:19am |
Today, June 9, 2017, Ashley, Kayla, Lauren, and I (Carson) set out to Milner Gardens to do our best impression of swamp monsters as we completed some wetland mapping. Starting at 8am we loaded our gear in the MABRRI truck and started northbound on the Island highway. After about a 40 minute drive with some excellent scenery along the way we arrived at our destination, the picturesque Milner Gardens. Pulling into the parking lot we were greeted by a very calm group of deer lounging about in flat spot of grass near the truck. |
Westwood Farm Stream Adventure | June 24, 2019 - 1:19pm |
On Tuesday, June 11th, Alanna, Colby, and I visited the beautiful Westwood Farm and Cathers Lake to continue water monitoring and plant identification. Westwood Farm is 48 gorgeous acres of meadow bisected by the Millstone River and Sabiston Creek. We plan to do minnow trapping and water monitoring in the Millstone, but we have had difficulties accessing the water due to a 2-3 meters barrier of Himalayan blackberry preventing our entry. In our previous visit we were able to locate an access point, so today we went exploring. |
Western Deans' Agreement | August 1, 2023 - 11:23am |
Vancouver Island University is a member of the Western Deans' Agreement (WDA). This agreement was established in 1974 as an expression of cooperation and mutual support among universities offering graduate programs in Western Canada. The agreement provides an automatic tuition fee waiver for visiting students. See below for instructions if you are (1) a VIU graduate student looking to go 'outbound' to another western university or (2) an non-VIU graduate student looking to come 'inbound' and take a VIU course. |
