MABRRI's research and community engagement coordinators, project coordinators, VIU students, and faculty associates work with community partners to create and conduct research projects that advance our understanding of people and nature, and the interaction between these, within the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region and across Vancouver Island. Listed below are some of the projects that MABRRI is currently working on.

Please be aware that due to faculty holidays, the REB is unable to accept new applications between May 27th and August 15th.

Resubmitted applications, amendments, and renewals will continue to be processed until July 5th. 

The REB Office will be closed from July 15th to August 15th.

NSERC Alliance Grant Program April 19, 2024 - 1:34pm

Join Megan Griffiths and Reinack Hansen, via Teams, from NSERC’s Pacific and Prairies Regional Office as they provide an overview of NSERC’s Alliance grants program. VIU’s Strategic Communications team is here to support you as you navigate the world of media interviews. Team members were working print, radio, and TV journalists in our past careers, and we know what reporters are looking for because we have been in their shoes! In this short media training workshop, learn strategies for clearly communicating your research during a media interview and how to prepare for success.

Mitacs Funding – The Essentials April 19, 2024 - 11:11am

During this interactive session, Dr. Kennefick will provide a historical perspective of VIU's engagement with Mitacs, as well as an overview of the key funding streams available to post-secondary institutions, such as Mitacs Accelerate, Elevate, and Business Strategy Internship. In addition, this session will cover new programmatic offerings, such as Express Accelerate (1-3 internship units) and the Umbrella model.

Next Level Research Data Management: DMP Assistant and Data Repositories Workshop April 19, 2024 - 11:09am

Data Management Plans are about to become mandatory for many tri-agency funding opportunities.  A key tool to assist with this new requirement is the Data Management Plan (DMP) Assistant.  The DMP Assistant is a national, online, bilingual data management planning tool developed by the Digital Research Alliance of Canada to assist researchers in preparing data management plans (DMPs). In this hands-on workshop staff from the library and VIU’s SRCA office will discuss how the DMP Assistant works and guide you through the process so that you can make your own data management plan.

VIUFA Assisted Leave and Time Awards Workshop April 19, 2024 - 10:09am

The VIUFA Assisted Leave Committee will host a workshop for VIUFA faculty applying for a VIUFA Assisted Leave during the 2025/2026 year and Time Awards. At the workshop, we will review eligibility, the process for submitting an application, merit review, criteria, and share tips for preparing a strong proposal.

CFI’s biennial Innovation Fund is a competitive program that funds large-scale (>$1M total project cost) infrastructure projects. CFI funds research equipment and components, software subscriptions and licenses, laboratory furniture, communications infrastructure, building renovations essential to house and use the infrastructure and other infrastructure-related costs.  Research projects from all disciplines are eligible to apply to CFI, however, key themes for the 2025 Innovation Fund competition include:

This form can also be used by non-school youth groups, and for post-secondary classes that wish to take advantage of our educational programs. 

 Important Notes

  • Fees are $125/hour + GST for VIU educator‐led programs (see variations below).
  • School groups are limited to 30 students.
  • Transportation is the responsibility of the school/teacher.
  • School classes may use classroom or outdoor areas for lunch or snack if not in use.

The MABR is one of the 19 biosphere regions across Canada to receive funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada for efforts towards enhancing biodiversity conservation. Working with the Canadian Biosphere Reserves Association and numerous partners within the MABR, our project focuses on activities that aim to enable some of the buffer and transition zones within the region to meet the international guidance and standards to qualify them as Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs). OECMs are defined by the Convention on Biological Diversity as:

As part of MABRRI’s Universities and the SDGs: Engaging the campus community with the 2030 Agenda project, this webpage is an SDG resource hub for both youth and educators. We hope that by providing youth access to SDG resources, we can help facilitate conversations and initiatives to increase engagement and implementation for the SDGs.

Universities and the Sustainable Development Goals April 12, 2024 - 1:23pm

Throughout 2018 and 2019, the MABRRI team investigated how VIU is meeting the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through an extensive literature review, over 80 meetings with VIU faculty and staff, and three community engagement events, the MABRRI team researched not only how VIU is meeting the SDGs, but what VIU can do moving forward to continue to meet them in the future.

VIU and MABRRI have joined the University of Alberta and a handful of other universities across Canada as part of the Canadian Mountain Network (CMN). Over the next 3 years, starting in 2019, VIU will contribute to the CMN's research on mountain ecosystems.
