A New Season for Bull Kelp | March 4, 2019 - 4:08pm |
On Sunday, January 13th, 2019 the MABRRI team set out to drop new bull kelp lines on our established bull kelp plots located in the Northumberland Channel, as well as off the Winchelsea Islands. The day started bright and early, when Haley Tomlin (project coordinator), Chrissy Schellenberg (volunteer diver), and Mark Bright (volunteer diver from Sundown Diving) met with Captains Ryan and Tom Fredrickson at the marina. We loaded the boat with hundreds of pounds of concrete, along with our bull kelp lines and other gear needed for the day. |
Cameron Lake Monitoring and Mapping | March 4, 2019 - 4:10pm |
I couldn’t ask for a better way to spend a Thursday then out on the boat on Cameron Lake. It was my very first time doing lake monitoring aboard ‘Big Red’ (a name I have given to the MABRRI zodiac). I’ve been hoping to take part in this project all summer, so needless to say, I was pumped to get out there bright and early in the morning. This project, funded by the VIU Research and Awards committee, is currently in its 2nd year and has, from my understanding, been an overall great success. |
Mount Arrowsmith Helicopter Trip | February 14, 2024 - 9:50am |
These past few days at MABRRI have been absolutely abuzz with energy, thanks to our wonderful visitors from the Striking Balance film crew! Striking Balance is an episodic documentary series aired on both the Knowledge Network and the TVOntario network that features a different Canadian UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in every installment. The program showcases how biosphere reserve designations enhance natural ecosystems and human communities by thinking about people as part of the environment. |
Snaw-Naw-As Garden | March 5, 2019 - 10:47am |
This summer has been a good one for the Snaw-Naw-As Garden of Spiritual Healing. Located in Nanoose bay, a dedicated group of elders and community members have been hard at work growing a variety of fruits and vegetables as well as a number of traditional native plants such as Devil’s club. Overlooking the Salish Sea, the garden is a small oasis that I have been fortunate enough to visit and work on every week (I have the sun burns and tan lines to prove it). |
Gold River trip | March 5, 2019 - 10:46am |
The Village of Gold River, VIU's World Leisure Centre of Excellence, and MABRRI are working in collaboration to create a strategic tourism plan for the municipality. This plan is intended to help guide the Village of Gold River to develop their tourism sector in a way that helps the community achieve economic, environmental, and social benefits. Creating a plan that help to provide all those desired benefits requires a lot of data collection, which was the perfect excuse to plan an office camping trip to Gold River. |
