2023 REACH Award Get-Together April 25, 2023 - 11:24am

Hello, REACH Award recipients! Let's meet, greet, and eat!! 

You are invited to the 2022/23 REACH Award get-together, an opportunity for students to share their projects and meet fellow student researchers. Please indicate the day and time that works best for you.

Food (likely pizza) and drinks will be provided, so please indicate any dietary restrictions.

The event will be hosted in B305|R440 - Research Commons. We look forward to hearing from you!

2024 Research and Creative Activity Symposium April 25, 2024 - 1:12pm

Join this celebration and showcase of scholarship, research, and creative activity at Vancouver Island University.

The day will begin with a panel presentation on transformative learning through research moderated by Dr. Nicole Vaugeois, Associate Vice-President, Research and Graduate Studies. Throughout the day VIU employees will share the projects that they are pursuing in 15-minute presentations and poster presentations.

2024 Research and Creative Activity Symposium - Call for Proposals May 8, 2024 - 10:44am

The Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity Office is sponsoring a one-day Research and Creative Activity symposium during the SRCA Showcase month in April 2024. We would like to invite proposals from employees across the institution to participate in this event to present the work they are involved in but rarely have the opportunity to share with each other or our students.

2nd Annual MABR BioBlitz March 5, 2019 - 10:11am

A BioBlitz is a method used to collect as much information as possible, in a short amount of time, about the biodiversity and species richness of flora and fauna species in a given area. The BioBlitz that occurred on April 22, 2017 in the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region (MABR) involved local experts, participants, and volunteers undertaking two sessions, a morning and afternoon, to explore the BioBlitz location and identify as many species of flora and fauna as they could.

3-minute Slam March 21, 2024 - 4:28pm

It is becoming more and more important to be able to tell people about your work in easy-to-understand language in a short amount of time. The 3-minute Slam showcases these skills. One PowerPoint slide and one prop is allowed. The idea is to have fun, be creative, and get the audience excited about your project.

Thank you for submitting your scores for the 2021 3MT. Please just work your way down the form as each student presents. Refer to the 3MT VIU Judging Sheet you were provided when determining scores. 

You are invited to include comments, although they are not necessary. These will be passed along to the student to help them grow their presentation skillset.

When all the fields are completed for each presenter you will submit your form. 

Your participation in VIU's 2021 Three-Minute Thesis is very much appreciated. I hope you learned a few things along the way.

3MT Attendance March 30, 2023 - 7:46am

The 2023 3-Minute Thesis will be held in the Trades Discovery Centre on the VIU campus on April 4. Doors will open at 5:30 with the talks starting at 6pm sharp! Join us for light refreshments and great learning as our graduate students strut their stuff to decide who becomes the VIU 3MT Champion.

This form will let us know you are coming and you will receive a reminder 24 hours prior to the event. All attendees will also have a chance to vote for their favorite to receive the People's Choice award.

On Wednesday, July 8th, Pierce and I went out for an adventure in the MABR with Courtney and Mandy. We took this day as a great opportunity to explore some of the MABR’s 10 Amazing Places including Parksville Community Park, Rathtrevor Beach, and Top Bridge. 

A Forage Fish Refresher on Thetis Island August 3, 2022 - 11:17am

Last week we had the pleasure of working with one of our great citizen science groups! 

On Friday, members of the MABRRI team made the trek over to Thetis Island to work with the Thetis Island Nature Conservancy (ThINC). ThINC is one of our many amazing volunteer groups who help us to sample beaches for forage fish eggs throughout the coastal waters of the Salish Sea. 

A New Season for Bull Kelp March 4, 2019 - 4:08pm

On Sunday, January 13th, 2019 the MABRRI team set out to drop new bull kelp lines on our established bull kelp plots located in the Northumberland Channel, as well as off the Winchelsea Islands. The day started bright and early, when Haley Tomlin (project coordinator), Chrissy Schellenberg (volunteer diver), and Mark Bright (volunteer diver from Sundown Diving) met with Captains Ryan and Tom Fredrickson at the marina. We loaded the boat with hundreds of pounds of concrete, along with our bull kelp lines and other gear needed for the day.

A New Take on the 3 'R's: Reading, Writing & Research: Undergraduate Students as Scholars April 26, 2021 - 1:30pm

Join us to discuss research experiences for the humanities and social sciences. SRCA is hosting a small VIU panel to share ideas about integrating research and scholarship into classroom settings as well as guiding undergraduates in their own inquiry based projects. Come hear about applied examples that you can integrate into your own teaching and scholarship.
