Microscopes, Manila Clams and Milner Gardens & Woodland; Oh My! | July 6, 2022 - 9:52am |
I fell in love with the Island when I moved here 5 years ago for my first year at VIU. Since then, that love has grown to a deep appreciation, respect and interest in the community and environment I now call home. When I saw the Student Research Assistant job posting, I had minimal knowledge on the MABR, MABRRI, or what kind of research was being done on campus. However, I quickly recognized the unique opportunity offered to me, and delved into some research. I had no idea what a biosphere reserve was, let alone a forage fish! |
Tread Lightly: taking a closer look at what’s beneath our feet on the beach | January 2, 2024 - 11:49am |
“I can’t believe I used to put sand in my mouth as kid,” I said out loud in disbelief. Today, I am tasked with analyzing the different samples we collected across various beaches for our Forage Fish Spawning Habitat Monitoring project. After these samples have been collected in large Tupperware containers, MABRRI team members begin to process the beach sediments using a sieving and vortex method that separates all the larger matter from the very fine grains of sand particles (and hopefully eggs). |

Supporting local environmental organizations | April 21, 2022 - 12:50pm |
I was a research assistant for MABRRI over this past term at VIU while being part of the Masters of Community Planning program. Just like how MABRRI is part of so many different projects and initiatives, my position was very diverse and provided me lots of different opportunities to grow my skills! Some of the projects I was part of were developing social media content for MABR, editing and producing sustainability educational booklets for grades 1-7, and providing digital support for a variety of organizations part of the Mid-Island Stewardship Caucus. |
