Eligibility

The competition challenges graduate students to deliver a compelling presentation of their project and its significance to a room of non-experts in just three minutes.

To participate in VIU's 3MT you must currently be registered in a graduate program at VIU. Students must not have graduated prior to the date of the competition final.

The goal of this session is to introduce participants to the broad landscape of health research in Canada and will cover a wide range of topics, including: What is health research and why is it important? Who provides funding to make it happen? Who typically conducts research studies? How do you write a good research question? What are different ways to share study findings? Together, and with community partners, they ask thought-provoking questions and challenge conventional ideas. They investigate, innovate and create new knowledge and works that go on to change individual learning journeys, disciplinary knowledge, and community/industry practices. They experiment with new models and techniques forging new ground and innovative practices.

World-Class VIU Research Vehicle Will Monitor Air Quality in Nanaimo This Winter November 4, 2019 - 11:01am

The Mobile Mass Spectrometry Lab, a.k.a. the Mass Specmobile, is the only one of its kind in Canada.  The high-tech innovations onboard allow researchers to continuously measure trace-level contaminants from a moving vehicle. The molecular-level information allows them to map out the geographical distribution of atmospheric components that have an impact on regional air quality, including volatile organic compounds, particulate matter, and greenhouse gases. The AERL is moving its footprint on the VIU campus into the forth floor of the newly opened Health and Sciences Centre.  We now have a state-of-the-art mass spectrometry facility, with significant space for growth in targeted research areas.  Additional sample preparation and wet chemistry facilities complete the laboratories, allowing expansion of existing research, and accommodating new initiatives.
