Selective Breeding Program January 6, 2022 - 10:08am

In British Columbia, many shellfish hatcheries are currently struggling with annual mortality events, typically occurring in the summer months, that have nearly bankrupted some companies and have forced others to permanently close their facilities. These mortalities are attributed to an array of causes, such as increased occurrence and severity of marine heat waves, infectious bacteria, viruses, ocean acidification, and climate change.
VIU Grad Discovers Two-Million-Year-Old Skull while Attending Field School in South Africa June 15, 2021 - 11:33am

Good discovered the fossil, one of the best-preserved Paranthropus robustus specimens known to science, while she was attending the Drimolen Field School of Palaeoanthropology and Geoarchaeology in 2018. The excavation site was at the Drimolen Palaeocave System within the Cradle of Humankind, located northwest of Johannesburg, South Africa.
Food and Sovereignty Symposium - Keynote Speaker Ozoz Sokoh June 22, 2021 - 10:23am

Hosted virtually by VIU and the journal Gender & History the Symposium will examine how histories of food and sovereignty have intersected with gender over time. Keynote speaker Ozoz Sokoh will highlight how food is more than nourishment for the body but also an important aspect of people’s history and heritage. Sokoh's keynote webinar is the only portion of the symposium open to the public. Sokoh is a food explorer, culinary anthropologist and food historian from Nigeria.
May Forage Fish Sampling June 15, 2021 - 10:54am

I’m a student research assistant with MABRRI for the summer and a part of my job is helping sample for forage fish embryos! The term ‘forage fish’ refer to small prey fish that feed the larger, pelagic fish in the ocean. Common forage fish include sardines, herring, and anchovies but the two we’re interested in are the Pacific sand lance and surf smelt. Both these species lay their eggs in the sand; Pacific sand lance spawn in the fall and winter months, while the surf smelt spawn in year round.

Wetland Monitoring in the MABR June 11, 2021 - 9:44am

The MABR is comprised of many unique and diverse ecological landscapes, including some very spectacular wetlands! However, relatively little is known about these wetlands and their importance in the hydrology of the MABR. Since both groundwater and surface water play a critical role in providing many coastal communities in MABR with water throughout the year, the Regional District of Nanaimo’s (RDN) Drinking Water and Watershed Protection (DWWP) program and MABRRI began researching more about these wetlands through the Wetland Mapping and Monitoring project.

      Led by Nicole Bennett from the Faculty of Management. A research project is similar to a business project in that they both have specific objectives, partners, risks, resources, a schedule, and budget that need to be adhered to.  Applying project management principles to research will give researchers the tools and techniques to complete their research in a timely and methodical manner and will allow the researcher to have a gauge to know where they are at in their plan.
