Approved September 19, 2008 A guiding principle of the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) is that, “animals must not be subjected to unnecessary pain or distress”. The experimental design must offer them every practicable safeguard, whether in research, in teaching, or in testing procedures” (CCAC 1989) An endpoint is defined by the CCAC as the point at which an animal's pain and/or distress is terminated, minimized or reduced, by taking actions such as killing the animal humanely, terminating a painful procedure, or giving treatment to relieve pain and/or distress.” |

All Principal Investigators and personnel listed on animal user protocols are required to complete four (4) core training modules (Ethics in Animal Experimentation, The 3 R’s of Animal Experimentation, Guidelines, Occupational Health and Safety) provided through the VIU Animal User Training course on VIULearn. Additional training modules on biosafety and WHMIS are available on VIULearn if applicable. |

Guidelines, Policies, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), are formalized procedures that have been approved by the VIU Animal Care Committee (ACC) that are used to educate animal users at VIU on the currently approved techniques and practices. These procedures enable the VIU ACC to implement the institutional Animal Care Policy and Animal Care Procedures. |

"The CCAC is the national peer review agency responsible for setting and maintaining standards for the ethical use and care of animals used in science (research, teaching and testing) throughout Canada." (CCAC Website). VIU's Animal Care and Use Policies are developed in accordance with CCAC standards and guidelines. VIU holds a Certificate of Good Animal Practices from CCAC, which means that VIU's Animal Care and Use program has been assessed by a CCAC assessment panel. The panel has found VIU's standards satisfy CCAC's guidelines and policy statements. |

The mission of Animal Care Services (ACS) is to ensure high-quality care for animals and facilitate research and teaching at Vancouver Island University. Animal Care Services works closely with the Animal Care Committee to provide services in support of the VIU’s Animal Care and Use Program. The Director of Research Operations manages the ACS team and reports to the AVP Scholarship, Research, and Graduate Studies on animal care needs at VIU. Research with animals may only be undertaken if VIU finds the use of animals acceptable and of scientific merit. |

An REB Protocol for Course-Based Student Research provides an efficient process for VIU faculty to receive REB approval for minimal risk student research involving human participants conducted as a requirement of course completion. Once approved, an REB Protocol for Course-based Student Research documents the scope of projects, methods, and participant populations that student researchers may undertake with REB approval as part of a course under the supervision of the course instructor. |
