As part of the Office of Graduate Studies' Lunch & Learn Series we invite VIU's Graduate Student Scholars to give a talk on an aspect of their research or internship to help develop what we call 'power skills' - nothing soft about them. 

Pancommunications.com sums up why public speaking is important:

  1. To win over the crowd
  2. To motivate people
  3. To inform

And we agree. Only we would add one more: To grow community.

Leadership is important because it inspires, motivates, and sets an example for people to accomplish positive changes in the world (Reference). In order to help expand our graduate students leadership skillset the Office of Graduate Studies is facilitating a number of intimate workshops with leaders from across the institution and our community on various topics chosen by the students. Bring on the positive change.

The Oyster is Our World - Celebrating Research in Deep Bay May 10, 2023 - 4:28pm

Join us as we celebrate research related to Deep Bay at this special free event! Enjoy complimentary food and wine for purchase overlooking scenic Baynes Sound while listening to VIU faculty, staff and students present their research. Boat, lab and beach tours will take place after the presentations. Registration for tour of choice is on a first-come first-serve basis on site.

A free shuttle will be provided for anyone wishing to come from VIU's Nanaimo campus. Space is limited for shuttle seats so secure your space now!

Qualifying UNESCO buffer zones as Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures within the MABR April 12, 2024 - 1:33pm

The MABR is one of the 19 biosphere regions across Canada to receive funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada for efforts towards enhancing biodiversity conservation. Working with the Canadian Biosphere Reserves Association and numerous partners within the MABR, our project focuses on activities that aim to enable some of the buffer and transition zones within the region to meet the international guidance and standards to qualify them as Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs). OECMs are defined by the Convention on Biological Diversity as:

Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback about what sort of things Graduate Students would like to learn about and experience in their first month on campus.

If your program is predominantly face-to-face, then 'on campus' means physically being on campus, as well as any virtual experiences you may engage with (e.g. the website).

If your program is predominantly virtual, then 'on campus' is an entirely virtual place, and we will interpret your responses as such.

Information Technology & Applied Systems (ITAS) Student Project Fair April 6, 2023 - 9:37am

The Information Technology & Applied Systems (ITAS) students are hosting the first ITAS Student Project Fair on April 17. There will be a variety of projects that include web applications, games, remote control vehicles, an auto-sensing turret, an automated watering system and a home server system.
