Bring Your Lunch & Learn about ... The Lower Cat Stream Ecological Region of VIU is a Great Outdoor Classroom for Vancouver Island University August 29, 2018 - 11:44am

Following the lead of the Elder Kwulasulwat Dr. Ellen White, we used the Lower Cat Stream ecological region of Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo as an outdoor classroom to estimate the amount of carbon dioxide sequestered by red cedar, yew, red alder, big-leaf maple, arbutus, and douglas fir trees indigenous to the region.  The VIU outdoor classroom area connects with Buttertubs Estuary and the Millstone River, a wild salmon bearing stream.

With Paris Gaudet, Capacity Building Programs Lead, Canada’s Digital Technology Supercluster. In this session, learn about the status of the new Digital Technology Supercluster organization and its key activity stream – Capacity Building. The focus of this discussion is to start a conversation about what’s possible and explore opportunities for collaboration. The Supercluster Capacity Building initiatives encompass four themes: 1) Diverse Digital Workforce 2) Building the Digital Economy in the Regions 3) Indigenous Digital Skills Training 4) Women in Technology Leadership.

With Samantha Letourneau, Executive Director of Literacy Central Vancouver Island.  In honour of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women in Canada’  Samantha will reflect on this question from her experience, which is rooted in participatory literacy work. Participatory literacy work has everything to do with the primacy of learners’ knowledge, feelings and experience.

Panel presenters include: Pete Law - Mid-Vancouver Island Habitat Enhancement Society, Ceri Peacey - Friends of  the French Creek Conservation Society, and Lynn Brookes - North Island Recovery Association. This session is co-sponsored by the Mt. Arrowsmith Biopshere Region Research Institute.

Deep Bay Shoreline Cleanup September 12, 2018 - 1:50pm

Come join us on Saturday September 22nd from 9:30am to 12:00pm and help us clean-up the shores of Deep Bay! Meet, here, at the station for instructions at 9:30am and teams will be dispatched around Deep Bay until noon cleaning up debris left from the busy summer months. Afterwards, the station will be open from 12pm to 3pm with FREE admission just for volunteers!  Coffee, tea, and treats will be provided. We hope to see you there!

Two VIU students begin classes with prestigious Tri-agency scholarships September 18, 2018 - 9:42am

Jodi is entering her second year in the geography department and her project is titled: ArcGIS Parks and Gardens Information Model Expanded: A complete plant records system. She is working under the supervision of Dr. Paul Zandbergen and was awarded the Alexander Graham Bell CGS-M. 

Dylan has just arrived in the Master of Community Planning program and his project is titled: Equitable Planning: Measuring Quality of Life Among Marginalized Urban Groups.He received the Joseph Armand Bombardier CGS-M.

Each award is valued at $17,500.00.

Science & Tech Research Hour September 24, 2018 - 12:06pm

To celebrate and disseminate some of the research activities happening at VIU, the Faculty of Science and Technology is a monthly seminar series.  Faculty, Students, Grad Students, Adjunct Faculty and visiting Researchers are welcomed to participate and share their discoveries with members of VIU’s Science & Tech. The hour will include short presentations with an opportunity for discussion afterwards.

Presenter:  Jamie Gorrell will be discussing his research on “Inbreeding, maladaptation and genetic pollution impairment in conserving endangered species”.
