VIU is pleased to announce the recipients of the inaugural President's Awards for Community Engagement for 2018.

Exemplary Community-Academic Partnership Award

This award is given to recognize a mutually beneficial partnership between an individual or group at Vancouver Island University and an external community (or organization, agency). The work of the partnership should align with the vision and mandate of both partners resulting in new, innovative and measurable impacts to community stakeholders and the VIU community.

Two VIU students begin classes with prestigious Tri-agency scholarships September 18, 2018 - 9:42am

Jodi is entering her second year in the geography department and her project is titled: ArcGIS Parks and Gardens Information Model Expanded: A complete plant records system. She is working under the supervision of Dr. Paul Zandbergen and was awarded the Alexander Graham Bell CGS-M. 

Dylan has just arrived in the Master of Community Planning program and his project is titled: Equitable Planning: Measuring Quality of Life Among Marginalized Urban Groups.He received the Joseph Armand Bombardier CGS-M.

Each award is valued at $17,500.00.

Last Friday (August 10th), Kidston, Brian, Chrissy, and I packed up MABRRI’s trusted Dodge caravan and hit the road with our coordinators Haley and Graham. Our destination? Englishman Falls Provincial Park. I want to say that the job we had to do was no easy walk in the park, but it did, in fact, require us to walk in and around said park. Our task for the day was to return to MABRRI’s established EREN plots to measure and record each tree within them.

3-minute Slam March 21, 2024 - 4:28pm

It is becoming more and more important to be able to tell people about your work in easy-to-understand language in a short amount of time. The 3-minute Slam showcases these skills. One PowerPoint slide and one prop is allowed. The idea is to have fun, be creative, and get the audience excited about your project.

The 10-minute oral presentation can be an effective way to try out new ideas, introduce your work to others, and hone your public speaking skills. Presenting at a conference is a great opportunity to gain valuable feedback from your community, and your participation is a fantastic addition to your professional resume and academic CV.

CREATE will have a student photography exhibit that will encourage students to show off their curious and creative sides. In particular, we are looking for a shot of your VIU experience in 2024-25 – this could be school or extra-curricular-based.

The Libraries of Royal Roads University and Vancouver Island University collaboratively offer VIURRSpace to digitally preserve and showcase selected scholarly and creative works of the universities, together with special collections that represent the unique character of the region.

Faculty members at VIU are encouraged to mobilize and digitally preserve their scholarship, research and creative activity products in this repository. VIU faculty and staff collection

The mission of VIU Publications is to publish the scholarly, intellectual and creative works by members of the VIU community. VIU Publications is an amalgam of open access scholarly outputs with the principal aim to bring the work of VIU faculty, students, centres and institutes into the public realm thereby offering accountability to our communities, serving a public good, and enhancing VIU’s reputation and reach internationally. This scholarship, once disseminated has the potential to enlighten society, engage citizens and address complex challenges.
