Gender Historians Bring International Research Journal to VIU November 4, 2019 - 11:02am

The world’s leading journal on the history of gender relations is now basing its North American editorial operations out of Vancouver Island University (VIU). VIU History Professors Dr. Cheryl Krasnick Warsh, Dr. Katharine Rollwagen and Dr. Cathryn Spence made a successful bid to become the North American co-editors of Gender & History, a well-respected international journal that publishes academic articles exploring the history of gender relations. UN Sustainable Development Goals and VIU October 4, 2018 - 3:42pm

Since July, the staff at Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute (MABRRI) have been trying to understand how VIU is meeting the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals, which cover topics from ending poverty to achieving gender equality, were adopted by nations globally in 2015. Since then, institutions have been attempting to align their goals with them as well. To date, this project has involved an extensive literature review and almost 40 meetings with faculty and staff, on top of attending a workshop at McGill University on the subject of sustainability.

VIU Team on the Cutting Edge of Better, More Accurate Drug Testing October 5, 2018 - 10:22am

Many drug users know their supply is tainted by the lethal opioid fentanyl, but new tech being developed at VIU tells them just how dangerous the next dose of heroin or cocaine could be.

VIU professor Chris Gill and his team work with sensitive analysis machines known as mass spectrometers, which can take an incredibly small sample of a drug and accurately show within minutes what will actually end up inside a users' veins.  Read full story.

The BC Regional Innovation Chair is funded by the Leading Edge Endowment Fund (LEEF) and has completed several research initiatives in collaboration with the Urban Aboriginal Knowledge Network (UAKN) and Vancouver Island University (VIU). 

Student Research Opportunities March 8, 2023 - 10:41am

A vital role of the Chair for AECD is to facilitate Aboriginal student involvement and participation in AECD research activities. The Chair will provide mentorship to students to increase research experience and build leadership capacity. As well, the students will provide their own knowledge and experience to inform the AECD work.

Advisory Committee and Activities January 10, 2023 - 10:00am

The BC Regional Innovation Chair for AECD Community Advisory Committee has been in place since April, 2011. This committee provides guidance and acts as a resource to the Chair.

The AECD Advisory Committee was made up of early childhood leaders in the community. Since 2019, the latest Advisory Committee is working towards a membership of Elders to reinstate traditional ways of knowledge and connection to supporting children in their communities.
